چکیده

This corrigendum contains a correction to some of the figures in the article ‘‘Spurious behavior of shock-capturing methods by the fractional step approach: Problems containing stiff source terms and discontinuities’’ [J. Comput. Phys. 241 (2013) 266–291]. There was a computer coding error in the computer code that generates the results. The coding error consists of failing to update the temperature from the final solution of the RK4 convection step time evolution before the reaction step using the Strang splitting in Eq. (29). In addition, if Nr > 1, the error includes no update to the temperature for each sub-iteration on the reaction step in Eq. (29). The error affects Figs. 5–12, 14–17, 19–22. By fixing the bug in the computer code, there are minor difference in the solution behavior by the studied numerical methods with the majority of the conclusion remains the same. There is however an improvement (reduction) in the spurious behavior by WENO5/SR. The correction to the text portion are:

Spurious behavior of shock-capturing methods by the fractional step approach: Problems containing stiff source terms and discontinuities

The goal of this paper is to relate numerical dissipations that are inherited in high order shock-capturing schemes with the onset of wrong propagation speed of discontinuities. For pointwise evaluation of the source term, previous studies indicated that the phenomenon of wrong propagation speed of discontinuities is connected with the smearing of the discontinuity caused by the discretization ...

In this paper we give error estimates on the random projection methods, recently introduced by the authors, for numerical simulations of the hyperbolic conservation laws with stiff reaction terms: ut + f (u)x =− ε (u− α)(u2 − 1), −1 < α < 1. In this problem, the reaction time ε is small, making the problem numerically stiff. A classic spurious numerical phenomenon—the incorrect shock speed—occu...

High order finite difference methods with subcell resolution for advection equations with stiff source terms

A new high order finite-difference method utilizing the idea of Harten ENO subcell resolution method is proposed for chemical reactive flows and combustion. In reaction problems, when the reaction time scale is very small, e.g., orders of magnitude smaller than the fluid dynamics time scales, the governing equations will become very stiff. Wrong propagation speed of discontinuity may occur due ...

Implementation of WENO schemes in compressible multicomponent flow problems

High-order accurate shock-capturing schemes are capable of properly resolving discontinuities with correct wave speeds in single-fluid Riemann problems. However, when different fluids are present, oscillations develop at interfaces. A class of existing interface-capturing methods that suppress these oscillations is based on firstand second-order accurate reconstructions with Roe solvers. In thi...
